AHMEDABAD: In the run-up to US President Donald Trump’s visit, police have begun a drive across the city to check whether landlords are following the requirement of verifying tenants with police before renting out their premises. Currently, the drive is focused on areas in the vicinity of Motera stadium — Chandkheda, Motera, and Sardarnagar. A notification by the Ahmedabad police commissioner requires landlords to inform the nearest police station before taking in any new tenant.
In the last two days, the special operation group (SOG) of the city police has booked 18 such landlords in Chandkheda and Sardarnagar who have accepted tenants without obtaining their identity papers or informing the nearest police station.
In Chandkheda, four landlords were booked under Section 188 IPC on Friday. Following this, on Saturday, SOG booked another 14 landlords from across the city for the same offense. Most of these houses were in Valmiki Awas Yojana in Sardarnagar.
